What are hormones and why are they so important?

Hormones are chemical messengers created by our endocrine system. This system is made up of many important glands such as the ovaries, adrenals, thyroid, pituitary, hypothalamus and pancreas that help to manage our stress, mood, sleep, reproduction, energy levels, hunger and so much more.

Many people, especially women, experience hormonal imbalances at some point in their lives, which can lead to feeling anxious, depressed, intense PMS symptoms, insomnia, weight gain (especially around the belly area), acne, hair loss, fertility problems and more.

Needless to say, when our hormones are happy we feel energized, vibrant and healthy. When they are imbalanced, we feel off, depleted, stressed and even burnt-out. Hormones are truly the gatekeepers to feeling our best and they contribute greatly to our overall health and well-being.

Herbs To Support Women’s Hormones
Maca, Shatavari & Ashwagandha

MACA

Maca has been used in Peru for over 2,000 to support fertility and boost libido. This ancient root contains glucosinolates that help to stimulate balanced hormone production and support healthy estrogen and progesterone levels - two key hormones that contribute to energy levels, a healthy menstruation cycle, fertility and reducing stress.

Maca has been shown to uplift your mood, support PMS and help your body adapt to stress. It also has a wide variety of micronutrients such as vitamin C, zinc, iron, and calcium. Not to mention, it has a high antioxidant content and over 19 amino acids. Wow what a powerhouse!

Maca can be found in powder form at almost any health food store. Be sure to buy high quality and organic sources.

SHATAVARI

This herb is from the asparagus family and is a staple in Ayurvedic medicine often referred to as the ‘Queen’ of Ayurvedic herbs. Shatavari can be used to help support immune function, stabilize mood throughout a woman’s cycle, support stress, calm nervous system and support balanced hormones.

It also has a nourishing and healing effect on the reproductive system, can help with breast milk production and support a woman and baby through pregnancy. This beautiful herb helps women’s hormones at all stages in life and can be found in a capsule or powdered form.

ASHWAGANDHA

Is considered the ‘King’ of Ayurvedic herbs. It has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3,000 years to help support the body in managing stress and boosting energy levels. Studies have shown that daily use can boost brain function, support anxiety and depression, and lower blood sugar and cortisol levels (stress hormone).

You can find this herb in pill form or in a powder that you can add to your morning smoothies or oatmeal.
