I had the recent privilege of attending two Native Indian cultural events led by Algonquin Elder Barbara Dumont-Hill. Her peaceful and powerful presence was absolutely captivating and an honour to experience. She greeted us with the words: “Are you living your life in a good way?” and explained that this is the traditional greeting of her tribe. They don’t say “hi, how are you” as they walk away not hearing the response, but their greeting is a sincere inquiry into the state of your life and behavior. Powerful words. A friendly challenge to look at, and answer for, the way you are living your life and a reminder that our lives and actions are connected.
This really hit a cord with me. It made me question am I living my life in a good way? “In a good way” likely means something different for each of us and that is the beauty of this greeting – you hear in it the question you need to hear. For me, living in a good waymeans living with an open mind and heart, honouring and respecting nature and animals, recognizing the importance of supporting people in a global village sense, being kind and humble. All these things I bundle up in the words living in a good way. Blows “hi, how are you” and “I’m fine” out of the water, don’t you think?
To give your mind and heart the strength to live your life in yourgood way, this is a juice-smoothie recipe bursting with berries. Berries are deeply healing for your brain and enormously protective of your heart. I feel that berries are wasted in a juicer – the yield is small and the flavour diminished. I prefer to keep berries whole and blend them with the crisp juice of cucumber and lemon. I hope you enjoy this recipe, and hope that you are living your life in a good way.
