Leaving The World Of Pain

“Pain is purposeless, without a cause and with no power to accomplish anything.” A Course In Miracles

For many of us traveling a spiritual path, we often come to believe that pain is necessary in order to grow. I have certainly believed this. Having a chronic illness from the time I was 7 years old until my late 20′s provided a lot of fodder for my belief in the purpose of pain.

And here’s the kicker. You do inevitably grow from painful situations. Be it physical or emotional pain, if you experience it, there is ample opportunity for growth.

But it begs the question: Do we need to experience pain in order to grow?

We were born to grow and evolve. We can’t help but grow and evolve. But why do some seem to evolve more quickly than others? Is it from adversity? Sometimes. But here we’re saying that’s not necessary. So how do we facilitate our growth without pain?

We ask. We inquire within ourselves. We get really, really honest with ourselves. We’re willing to enter into a place of stillness once and a while and sit with its infinite intelligence rather than continue to bombard our senses with stimulus. We ask those around us how they think we’re doing. We walk bravely out of our comfort zones and into unfamiliar territory. We follow our passions and our bliss rather than that which is expected of us from our families, communities, culture.

If you believe that you need to experience pain in order to grow, than you just might fulfill that perceived need. But if you cultivate the awareness that you can grow just by being aware of yourself, than you will begin to create deeper awareness and understanding.

Waking up has a domino effect. When you get up one morning and decide, for example, that you will only entertain kind thoughts about yourself and others, it’s like a stone that has dropped in the ocean. The ripple effects from those thoughts of kindness will move into deeper awareness. Because kindness is an act of awareness. To sit in criticism of yourself or others is to be unconscious; unaware.

Leave the world of pain behind. You don’t need it to wake up. You just need to be aware, in each and every moment, that there is a higher thought; a higher awareness. Reach for it as often as you can. It is infectious and life changing and requires no sacrifice.
