Going Barefoot For Better Health

“Illnesses do not come upon us out of the blue. They are developed from small daily sins against Nature. When enough sins have been accumulated, illnesses will suddenly appear.” ~Hippocrates

There is a new movement afoot (you’ll get the pun in a moment) that is gaining a great deal of attention. It’s an age-old concept that is being applied in an ultra-modern environment. It’s called Earthing.

Earthing is the result of bodily contact with the earth. It is the reconnection to Mother Earth. All that means is us taking off our shoes and socks making contact with the earth either by sitting, standing or walking barefoot. This is free and available to everyone. It can also involve the use of conductive products like bed sheets or floor pads that are linked by a wire and grounded.

Research is showing that the results of earthing remedies an electrical instability and electron deficiency. What does this mean? It means that when we are grounded our bodies become suffused with negative-charged free electrons that are abundantly sourced on the earth’s surface. As a result, your body immediately equalizes to the same electric energy level, or potential, as the Earth. This means healing.

Since we know that body is electrical in nature and that free radicals are positive-charged molecules at the root of disease, tissue destruction and inflammation, than it makes sense that Earthing remedies these ills. The Earth is negatively charged. It is a limitless source of negative-charged free electrons. According to the groundbreaking book, Earthing, The Most Important Health Discovery Ever Made, by Clinton Ober, Stephen T. Sinatra, M.D., and Martin Zucker, “Anytime you have two conductive objects and they make contact – such as your bare feet and the ground – electrons will flow from the place where they are abundant to the place where there are fewer of them. The electrical potential of the two objects will thus equalize. That’s grounding.”

So, what does this mean for our health? We are now aware that inflammation is the cause of a number of illnesses. To name a few, chronic inflammation is related to: allergies, Alzheimer’s Disease, ALS, anemia, arthritis, asthma, autism, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes (types 1 & 2), fibromyalgia, intestinal disorders (Crohn’s Disease, irritable bowel, diverticulitis, colitis), kidney failure, lupus, multiple sclerosis, pain, pancreatitis, psoriasis and eczema. When Harvard cardiologist Dr. Paul Ridker was asked about the cause of inflammation he said, “We are witnessing evolutionary biology in action – an adaptive response (inflammation) in the past is now maladaptive in our current modern environment.”

How often do our feet touch the earth, barefoot, during any given day? For most people, it’s never. We wear shoes, slippers, socks. We don’t want to get our feet dirty. But when we allow ourselves to make ‘skin to skin’ contact with the Earth, our bodies begin to shift.

We not only feel better, uplifted, but the research is strongly suggesting that Earthing prevents or reduces chronic inflammation and readily recovers us from injuries, trauma and exhaustion.

We have slowly moved away from the Intelligence of nature; of this Earth. It holds so much for us. It houses so much healing and wisdom. Perhaps the rudimentary act of simply making a physical connection with the Earth on a daily basis is something that our modern world would benefit from immensely. It sure can’t hurt. Give it a try. Barefoot, everyday, for about 20 or 30 minutes. See what happens.

I love this article, Annie. When I was growing up summers at the cottage we walked everywhere barefoot, stepping on rocks, twigs, leaves. Our feet became tougher through the summer and it was hard to get shoes on in the fall! But you’re so right, it feels so great to walk and be connected to the earth. Great article!
