30 Day Clean Eating Challenge
As of today, June 1st, I am entering into a 30 Day Clean Eating Challenge. That means, for the next 30 days, I will not consume ANY:
Last weekend, I ate some food that I normally don’t eat and drank some alcohol that I normally don’t drink. The result? I broke out in a severe hives rash that is requiring Prednisone to take it away. It is slowwwllly going away and is also being helped by my cutting out all of the allergens in my diet.
Over the winter, I noticed my tummy wasn’t acting like its usual exuberant self. My energy was low and my mood was flip flopping. At the end of February, I went on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, which basically mimics the Paleo Diet. This diet eliminates all grains, wheat, most dairy and all refined sugar. I felt AMAZING. But I ate so little (as I was following the introductory portion of the diet) and only stayed on it for 3 weeks. However, my tummy felt perfect. In fact, the issues that I was having went away after 3 days on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet.
Now, I need to revisit this diet because my body is clearly telling me that things are not in balance. I hesitate to call it a ‘diet’ because it’s not something that I plan to do short-term. I want to come at this, initially, as a challenge because it will make me accountable to YOU and it is known that habits are made or broken over about a month’s time.
So…WHO IS WITH ME?
This way of eating requires some time and thought. It requires you to home make most of your meals. It requires dedication. But it won’t disappoint. Here are some typical symptoms (that most people are not even aware that they have) that typically go away when you cut out wheat, dairy and gluten.
Bloating. You know that big, puffy gut you get after a meal? You won’t on this diet. It’s not really possible, unless you greatly overeat say, vegetables 🙂
Gas. Gas typically occurs with indigestion. Indigestion occurs when you combine proteins or fats with sugars. Remove the sugars and you lose the indigestion.
Fatigue. Because you are cutting out the offending food, you can’t help but eat more of the good stuff. Protein, vegetables and fruit, nut milks and flours. Eating a WHOLE FOODS DIET ensures that you are nourished. And when you are nourished, you lose the fatigue. Your body stops wanting.
Headaches. If you have any sensitivities to wheat, dairy or sugar (and they are the most common allergens) than when you eliminate them, you can expect to eliminate food-related headaches.
Insomnia. Insomnia is very often the product of adrenal burnout. The adrenals begin their cycle between the hours of 2 am and 4 am. If you are waking up at those times in the night and are having a hard time falling back to sleep, the adrenals may be stressed. Eliminating sugar will go a long way to unburden these precious glands.
Moodiness. The gut is now so often referred to as The Second Brain. Why? Because your mental and emotional health is completely and utterly dependent on good gut health. If you have a clean gut, you’ll feel vibrant and calm and happy. If you don’t, you won’t. You can google this and read for hours and hours on the effect of the gut on our psychology.
Excess Fat. If you need to lose some pounds, they will come off eating this way.
Cravings. We have cravings because we become addicted to certain foods. One of the most common cravings is sugar. Sugar cravings occur because we become hypoglycemic. Remove the (refined) sugar and you step off that roller coaster of craving and addiction.

I will also be posting some great recipes (some created by me, and others borrowed) that support a grain-free lifestyle beautifully. We shouldn’t have to give up good food and treats just because we’re cutting out the junk. On the contrary, some of the best foods that I’ve eaten recently have been made of nothing more than bananas, honey and coconut flour. Don’t knock it ’til you try it!
Once you clean your body of toxins, the old, refined, pre-packaged food will no longer taste good to you. It does nothing for your health…NADA…and can only exacerbate unhealthy symptoms and habits over the long term.
