Modern living has brought us a myriad of conveniences. It’s also introduced more chemicals, toxins and unhealthy food than any other time in history. To top it off, because of our convenienced, fast-paced world, we’re also pretty stressed out.

After two and a half million years our genetics became accustomed to eating wild game (and their organs), fish, seafood, plants (and lots of them), fruit and nuts and seeds.
According to Loren Cordain, PhD, a professor and author of The Paleo Diet, “Although evolution is an ongoing process for all living people, their genome is a result of past events in the generations of humans who came before them. Only 330 human generations have come and gone since the development of agriculture. Before this time, all humans on the planet made their living as hunter-gatherers. Although a number of genetic changes have occurred since the agricultural revolution, the majority of the human genome has resulted from the environment of our hunter-gatherer ancestors and earlier.”
What does this mean for us? Put simply, it means that our bodies and brains are not recognizing the foods that we’re putting into them. An example of this would be refined sugar.
Our hunter-gatherer ancestors may have gotten handfuls of ‘sugar’ in the form wild blueberries or raspberries, when they were in season, a month or two out of the year. We, on the other hand, eat sugar with most meals, and then in between meals. Not only is this sugar a far cry from the wild berries that our ancestors consumed, but it’s highly refined, genetically modified and wrapped up in chemical-laden, food-like products.
Our genetically predisposed bodies can only handle so much foreign matter. After a while, they’ll start to rebel.
To add to all of this, we live with non-stop distraction. Our smart phones, tablets and even our watches have us jumping and hyper-responsive. And we’re just not shutting down.
But there’s an upside to this…
When we give our bodies the foods that our ancestors survived on for millions of years (without pesticides or modification) than they begin to work really, really well again. They thrive. They think well. They move better. They look amazing.
Healthy bodies beget sound sleeps; sharper brains; happier emotions; a sense that we can do anything.
We can learn why some of us feel that we need distraction from ourselves and learn to get comfortable in our own skin again. We can calm down, be with ourselves and love our own company.
We can learn how to move our bodies in ways that shift our metabolism, accelerate our brains and change the way we look and feel.
We can release old, outdated trauma and conditioning so that we’re free to choose from now rather than repeating history over and over again.
